Falling & Rising

The Bible Reading Plan that I’m moving through had me reading Luke 2 (the best-known account of Jesus’ birth) on Good Friday. It was a fascinating juxtaposition — reflecting on Jesus’ birth and death at the same time. That backdrop gave greater depth to the prophetic words that Simeon shared with Mary when she brought her newborn son to the temple for the first time.

Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: “This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many . . .”

Luke 2:34

So true. Jesus is the dividing line. Following Him leads to flourishing life. Fighting Him leads to isolation and heartache. He is the same; it’s our response to Him that makes all the difference. Not unlike the birds and my window pane bird feeder.
