I only know of two times where we read that Jesus was “amazed” by something. What do you think it was?
- Knowing all the right answer.
- Looking like you have it all together.
- Getting lots accomplished.
I tend to spend much of my time on those kinds of things. None of those pursuits are all that amazing to Jesus. You know what is? Faith.
In Mark 6, we see that Jesus was “amazed” by their lack of faith. And in Luke 7, Jesus hears a man’s declaration of faith and can’t help but comment on it.
When Jesus heard this, he was amazed. Turning to the crowd that was following him, he said, “I tell you, I haven’t seen faith like this in all Israel.”
Luke 7:9
Jesus is amazed by faith, specifically faith that prompts action. Later in Luke 7, Jesus commends John the Baptism for living by faith. At the end of the chapter, we see a “sinful woman” praised by Jesus because of her act of faith.
Faith in action amazes Jesus.
